World Card Making Day - October 2, 2021

 

WCMD Began in 2006 set as the first Saturday in October by Paper Crafts magazine as a way to encourage crafters to get a head start on their holiday season.

It has become a day dedicated to making handmade cards. A store bought card just doesn't have the same love and care behind it as its personally made counterpart.

There are any number of events going on around the world. I am heading to a S' Crafter's Retreat at St. Peter Lutheran church in St. Peter MN this afternoon and tomorrow. I did get a head start on my Christmas cards using the design I made in July (link here), but oh so many still to do. I find having other crafters around me helps get the creative juices flowing. 

Here are some other ideas on how you can celebrate World Card Making Day: 

• Take out those craft supplies and start designing your Christmas card, or other cards you need to catch up on (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Birthday, Friend, etc.)
• Make it social, invite a friend. They don't have to be a paper crafter, or even a crafter. It's such a great feeling to help someone create an easy card and encourage them to mail it. 
• Open a Card kit and create a bunch of cards with it 
• Participate in an Online event:
• The Crafty Medic is hosting a 24 hour day of Cards in in a FB online event. Here is the link. This free event includes presentations from around the world teaching different tricks and techniques for card making (and more)
• Consider organizing your craft room -sometimes you can't get started if it feels overwhelming. 
• Go through your supplies and determine if you want to get rid of/ donate supplies that no longer give you joy. 
• Stamp pads- test them. If you haven't used them, they may be dried out. Re-ink to test. 
• Stamp sets- do you have any of the wood block sets that are pretty old? The rubber may be dried/coming off. Again, with non-use, these can dry up. Test them with ink and paper. Consider donating them, or toss if they no longer stamp a good image 
• Paper- I know, it's hard to give up paper.  found overtime, I no longer enjoyed working with paper that was too lightweight. I donated them to a girl scout troop and church school. 
• Markers- hmm- do they work?
• Embellishments: So many items in this category. 
• Do you use buttons any more? 
• Stickers- how old are they, again they may not stick. 
• Half used packets- maybe your kids want to use up some old embellishments.
• Glitter- hmm, do you really want that mess anymore? 
• Ribbon - well if you're like me you had every intent to use more, but yet there are spools of unused ribbon. Consider using it to decorate wrapped presents, bags, etc. Again, these can be donated if you find you wont use them.
• Above all, be honest with yourself as you look at each item. Make a "keep" and "do not keep" pile. Find places to organize the keep items so you can find them in the future. 

Last but not least, as I mentioned in yesterday's post, you can donate cards to "Cards For Kindness". Do you have extra cards hanging around that you haven't mailed and no longer have a need for them? Making a bunch of cards to donate works great as well.
