Double Sheet Wonder Cards Using Sweet Symmetry Designer Series Paper

Hello crafters! 

I recently hosted a craft retreat weekend and held a card class during the weekend. We made cards using the Double Sheet Wonder Technique. 

If you have ever wondered how to efficiently use your beautiful designer series paper to maximize the number of cards you can make per sheet, the Double Sheet Wonder is a great tool to have. Shannon West of Stampin' Up! shared this technique and I just fell in love with it.  

The technique uses 2 - 6" x 12" sheets of designer series paper, typically from the same set of paper so that they coordinate well. This allows for you to have 4 choices of patterns to mix and match with your cards and in the end makes a total of 11 cards out of a 12 x 12 paper!  Fellow Demonstrator, Julie Davidson, created a PDF of instructions detailing how you should cut your paper and layout to make 11 cards!  You can get a copy of the instructions here 


I used the Sweet Symmetry Designer Series Paper. My initial tip when cutting the 6" x 12" strip is to check if any images have a direction to them. In this case, I have images that are vertical, so the paper should be cut horizontally, that way when the rest of the strips are cut, they will be in the right direction. I made the mistake of cutting my paper vertically, so you will see that some of the cards have the vertical images in a horizontal fashion. I'm sure many people would never notice this if I had not pointed it out. 

Next you will want to gather: 

  • Coordinating card stock for your base cards, 
  • Basic white paper for your layers/sentiments, 
  • Coordinating inks, or just black 
  • Coordinating ribbon and embellishments, - Neutral works well unless you have a good match
  • Stamp set(s) with sentiments you want to use for your cards - I chose Thank You cards 
  • Punches/die cuts for the sentiments. -Tailored Tag is a favorite! 
  • TIP:  Try to limit the above choices to just a few so it does not feel overwhelming. I did choose quite a few options as I wanted to have samples for my class participants. 

The first group of cards uses a 4.5" strip of the papers, cut into more strips. This makes 4 cards. 


The cards are typically going to be horizontal, but I show some vertical as well since the direction of my images ended up being vertical. I used up some retired ribbon in the below cards as they matched well with my color scheme.    


The next group of cards uses a 4" strip of the papers, further cut into strips to make 4 fun fold cards. There is a small leftover strip that is used to make 2 of the 3rd set of cards. 


This fun fold is so easy to make, simply make an additional score at 1 1/4". 
Tip: Adhere your sentiment over a portion of the fold and base card so that it keeps the fold down. I also added a color layer to the white base card since white on white can get a bit washed out. Ribbon is optional on this card. I chose note to add it, but added the embellishments instead.  


The last 3 cards use the last 3.5" of the paper cut further into strips and the final 'leftover' pieces.  


The two main cards will be vertical, I do show a sample of one in horizontal. Additionally, I added a layer to the two cards as I felt it set off the paper better, but this is optional. No ribbon needed on these cards either so I added the embellishments. 


I loved how this technique used every scrap of paper!! It really is a game changer when I need to quickly get some quality cards done. Of course you can add die cuts and extras if you want, but at the end of the day, these cards look great.
